Privacy Policy
Your privacy matters. Here's exactly how we handle your data.
Data Collection
Atlas Logged does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data, location data, or any other user-generated content to our servers.
All data remains on your device, or optionally in your personal iCloud account if you enable sync. We have no servers, no databases, and no way to access your information. The only exception is our optional customer support chat feature, which processes only the messages you choose to send when contacting us for help (see Customer Support section below).
Apple Services Only
Atlas Logged uses exclusively Apple's built-in frameworks and services for core functionality:
- Core Location - for location tracking (requires your permission)
- Core Data - for local data storage on your device
- CloudKit - for optional iCloud sync (requires iCloud to be enabled)
- PhotoKit - for optional photo access (requires your permission)
- UserNotifications - for optional local notifications (requires your permission)
We do not use any third-party analytics, tracking, or advertising services. The only exception is our optional customer support chat feature (see Customer Support section below), which you only interact with if you choose to contact us for help.
Data Storage
Information like travel history and calendar entries is stored locally on your device using iOS Core Data.
There is no external backup or transmission of your location data to third parties. If you enable iCloud sync, your data is encrypted and synchronized exclusively through Apple's iCloud service, which we do not have access to.
All cloud features use exclusively Apple's iCloud service. We do not operate any servers or third-party cloud services for storing your travel data. The only exception is the optional customer support chat (see Customer Support section), which stores only your chat messages if you choose to contact us.
Multi-Device Sync (Optional)
This feature is entirely optional and requires iCloud to be enabled.
If you choose to use Atlas Logged on multiple devices, device metadata is synchronized via Apple's iCloud to coordinate tracking between devices. This includes:
- Device name (e.g., "John's iPhone")
- Device type (iPhone, iPad, or Mac)
- Last known location (latitude/longitude coordinates)
- Battery level
- Last active timestamp
- Primary/secondary device role
This metadata helps coordinate which device actively tracks your location. Only iPhones can be primary tracking devices; iPads and Macs are always secondary devices that display data but don't actively track location.
All device metadata is synced exclusively through Apple's iCloud using encrypted CloudKit containers. This data is only accessible to your devices signed in with your Apple ID.
Photos Access (Optional)
Photo library access is entirely optional and requires your explicit permission.
If you grant photo library access, Atlas Logged can display photos from your travels alongside your location history. The app:
- Only reads photo metadata (creation date and location information)
- Never modifies, uploads, or shares your photos
- Displays photos locally that match the dates and locations you visited
- Clusters photos by location on the map for easy viewing
Photo access uses Apple's PhotoKit framework exclusively. Photos remain in your device's photo library and are never copied, transmitted, or stored elsewhere.
You can revoke photo access at any time in iOS Settings without affecting location tracking functionality.
Notifications (Optional)
Notification access is entirely optional and requires your explicit permission.
If you enable notifications, Atlas Logged can send you local notifications about your travel activity and app status. All notifications are generated locally on your device using Apple's UserNotifications framework.
We do not send push notifications from external servers. You can disable notifications at any time in iOS Settings.
Customer Support & Live Chat (Optional)
Contacting support is entirely optional and only happens when you choose to reach out for help.
Atlas Logged offers in-app customer support via live chat powered by Chatwoot, a third-party customer support platform. This is the only third-party service used by Atlas Logged, and it's only active when you explicitly choose to contact us for help.
How it works:
- Session Persistence: Chatwoot uses cookies to maintain your chat session across visits, so you can continue previous conversations
- Anonymous by Default: You can chat with support without providing any personal information - the session is tracked via browser cookies only
- Optional Email: You may optionally provide your email address if you want to receive follow-up responses or continue conversations via email
- What's Collected: When you use the chat feature, Chatwoot may collect:
- Your chat messages and conversation history
- Browser cookies for session persistence
- Email address (only if you choose to provide it)
- Basic technical information (browser type, app version, timestamp)
Important: The chat feature does NOT have access to your location data, travel history, photos, or any other data stored in the Atlas Logged app. Only the information you explicitly type into the chat is sent to our support system.
Chatwoot is GDPR-compliant and processes data in accordance with applicable data protection laws. For more information about how Chatwoot handles data, visit their privacy policy at chatwoot.com/privacy-policy.
You can clear chat cookies at any time through your browser or device settings. If you never use the chat feature, no data is ever sent to Chatwoot.
Country Detection for Privacy Compliance
To determine which privacy regulations apply to you (such as GDPR in the EU), we perform a one-time check of your approximate location using your IP address. This ensures we show you the appropriate cookie consent options required by your local privacy laws.
How it works:
- Country-Level Only: We only determine your country, not your city or precise location
- Third-Party Service: We use Country.is API, which doesn't log requests or store IP addresses
- Session-Only Cache: Your country code is cached temporarily while your browser is open (up to 1 hour), then automatically cleared when you close your browser
- VPN-Friendly: If you switch locations (e.g., via VPN), simply close and reopen your browser for fresh detection
- No Tracking: This check is solely for compliance purposes - we don't track or profile visitors
- Graceful Fallback: If geolocation fails, we default to showing the cookie consent banner (safer for privacy)
Legal Basis: This processing is based on our legitimate interest in complying with regional privacy laws (GDPR Article 6(1)(f)). The check is necessary to determine which legal requirements apply to each visitor, and uses minimal data (IP address → country code only).
Your Control: The cached country information is automatically cleared when you close
your browser. You can also manually clear it at any time by opening your browser's console
and running: ChatwootConsent.clearGeoCache(), or by simply closing and reopening your browser.

Location Data
Location tracking requires your explicit permission and uses Apple's Core Location framework exclusively.
Location tracking happens entirely on your device. You control the precision level:
- Country Level: 20-50km threshold
- City Level: 1-20km threshold
- Precise: 25-2000m threshold
- Maximum: 5-200m threshold
Location data is processed locally using Apple's Core Location APIs and never leaves your device unless you manually export it or enable iCloud sync (which uses Apple's encrypted iCloud service). You can change or revoke location permissions at any time in iOS Settings.
Security
Data security depends on your individual device protection. We recommend:
- Using strong device passwords or biometric authentication
- Keeping your iOS software updated
- Enabling Face ID/Touch ID for app document protection
Children's Privacy
Because all data is stored locally and we collect no information, there are no specific data collection considerations for children's privacy. The app does not distinguish between users of different ages.
Changes to This Policy
We will notify users of any significant changes to this privacy policy through app updates. Users can opt-out of any external data sharing features if they are introduced in the future.

Bottom Line: Your location data is yours. We can't see it, we can't access it, and we can't share it. It stays on your device or in your personal iCloud account (if you enable sync). All core features use exclusively Apple's services and require your explicit permission. The only third-party service is our optional customer support chat (Chatwoot), which is only active when you choose to contact us for help - and even then, it never has access to your location data or travel history. That's the way it should be.
